CAPE TOWN 2018

THE PLACE

During our winter months the Western coast of Cape Town becomes the windsurfers dream. It’s 34 degrees, the wind blows 30+ knots almost every day and there are a selection of places to sail. Top that off with a vibrant nightlife, relaxed Braiis, gorgeous scenery, an exciting city, vineyards and amazing cheap steaks and beer!

When it comes to the windsurfing, most beaches offer cross-on port tack sailing with punchy beach breaks, but there is also a point break which works on big swells and a flat water lake locally to where we are staying. If you are willing to drive a little up or down the coast there are more point breaks and some stunning flat water spots too. There really are conditions to suit everyone, as long as you like it WINDY!

In the Blouberg area, where we will be based, the wind usually comes in mid-morning and hits the beaches and lake up-wind first then gradually builds and builds, and moves down the coast throughout the day.

It is so easy to see why Cape Town has become one of the top spots for wave sailors, including many of the World’s best.

COACHING

This is special clinic sees Colin from WindSurfCoaching team up with Ben Proffitt of windsurfing.tv, not only offering you top level coaching from two incredible windsurfers, but also the chance to star in Ben’s famous Training Diaries where you will be filmed daily and we will be covering your progress on the windsurfing.tv channel.

We coach 7 days out of 8 and will be on the water as much as possible and if not sailing or re-fuelling, you will be soaking up the WindSurfCoaching Jedi knowledge or watching yourselves back on windsurfing.tv.

Cape Town gives us so many sailing options that we will be working from the forecast and choosing our sailing spots for the morning and afternoon either the day or hour before, meaning that we can really try to choose the best places for the group’s ability and goals.

The conditions in Cape Town call for a fairly advanced level sailor, we ask that you are able to comfortably sail a wave board upwind and downwind and have some experience in waves. It is also vital that you are able to rig your own kit as we will be changing surf spots and rigging and de-rigging more than once a day. We can help you with building confidence in the waves, first jumps and all the way up to cracking your first loops, forwards and backwards. For those looking to improve their wave sailing ability we can guide you with timing on the wave right through to your first real smacks.

We will also show you Cape Town as we know it, take you to all of our favourite places to eat and drink and enjoy the company of the other guests.

FLIGHTS AND ACCOMMODATION

Turkish are currently the best airline to fly with especially when taking kit, they charge £80 for a 32kg kit bag.

We will be staying in the Big Bay/ Bloubergstrand area and recommend having a search for holiday lets there. You can rent some incredible houses with pools, hot tubs etc for a reasonable price but it works out best if you are a group of 4 or more. We also recommend finding a place that is within a secure complex for peace of mind, although we feel Cape Town is a safe place, especially in the area we are staying, there is always a risk of break ins and theft. If you find a place and would like an opinion or advice please forward the information to us.

KIT AND CAR HIRE

We strongly recommend taking your own kit with you but if you don’t have access to your own kit we can point you in the direction of some hire places, just ask for more information. When bringing your own kit, you will really only need a small quiver of sails, it is very windy so pack a 3.7!

Car or van hire is a MUST to get yourself to the different sailing spots. There are a tonne of options from really cheap old VW Golfs, which are a bit of a squash, to vans and flatbed pick-ups. Again, car hire works out best if shared between 2 or 3 people. We use Kenings for our vehicle rental; contact shannon@kenings.co.za and mention Ben Proffitt or windsurfing.tv for a discount.
