Day 10: Event and World Champions Crowned in Sunny Sylt

With the wind taking a well earned break on the final day of the 2017 Mercedes-Benz Sylt Super Grand Slam the prize giving was held in stunning sunshine in front of thousands of fans as the champagne flowed for the newly crowned event and world champions.

With no further racing completed Marco Lang (Fanatic / NorthSails) walks away with his first ever victory on the world tour after storming to victory in both of the eliminations completed, which sees the Austrian rise to 8th in the overall rankings. Meanwhile, Germany’s Vincent Langer (Fanatic / NorthSails) claims a superb second place in his first event of the year, while Britain’s Ross Williams (Tabou / GA Sails / Mystic / Shamal Sunglasses) completes the podium for the 3rd event in a row, which sees him cement 3rd place in the overall rankings with his closest rival Pierre Mortefon (Fanatic / NorthSails / Chopper Fins) only managing to finish 14th here.

Iballa Moreno’s (Starboard / Severne / Maui Ultra Fins) tense wait was finally brought to an end at 12pm with the sailors officially being released, which means she not only finishes the season as the world champion, but she has now won the world title for the last 4 years running. Daida Moreno (Starboard / Severne / Maui Ultra Fins) finishes 2017 as the vice-world champion after a 3rd place here, while Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard / NeilPryde / Maui Ultra Fins) completes the overall podium for the second consecutive season after claiming 2nd place here.

Victor Fernandez (Fanatic / NorthSails / Shamal Sunglasses) did everything in his power to stop Philip Köster (Starboard / Severne / Maui Ultra Fins) winning the world title by winning the event, but the German still claimed 3rd place here, which sees him complete a miraculous comeback this season after a major knee injury to be crowned the world champion for the 4th time in his career, while Marcilio Browne (Goya Windsurfing) completes the overall podium.

Gollito Estredo (Fanatic / NorthSails) completed a phenomenal event for the Fanatic and NorthSails Windsurf team as he defended his single elimination crown to win an incredible 8th world title ahead of Amado Vrieswijk (JP / Severne) and Jacopo Testa (RRD / RRD Sails / AL360), who breaks into the overall top 3 for the first time in his career.

Meanwhile, in the 3rd foil exhibition of the season Julien Quentel (Patrik / Avanti) claimed the top place on the podium ahead of Sebastian Kornum (JP / NeilPryde) and Jordy Vonk (Fanatic / NorthSails).

With the prize giving complete the curtain was drawn closed on the biggest windsurfing event of the year, which saw some of the best conditions ever in Sylt. The tour now takes a 5 or 6 week break before the final event of the season in New Caledonia, which will see the men’s and women’s slalom fleets in action once more.
