For the second episode in the Novela das 8 series, we stay on Maui, where Kauli scores a good size Jaws with no one else around.

Kauli: ‘The session here was actually my second session at Jaws, the first one was funny: me and a good friend wanted to redo the windsurf session that Robby Naish has on his video Rip, so we jumped from the rocks at the lighthouse and we swam until we got some wind to go upwind. That took us almost three hours, slowly going upwind with the wave gear. After this we finally had the glory of riding some big waves, not as big but really nice, after which we did a downwinder all the way to Ho’okipa. In total I think we sailed five hours, with no rescue at anytime!’

‘The Jaws session on Novela das 8 was a different kind of adventure, because we went by jet ski. We were three people at the ski, really overloaded, with my friend Maxi de Castro as our rescue and me and Keith Teboul sailing, but when we were leaving Maliko Bay a wave caught us and flipped the ski. We made it again out through the channel but in the middle of the trip up to Jaws we realised one piece of Keith’s mast was missing. Keith said to just keep going because he thought it was kind of a message for him not to sail; especially on big wave days like these you become a little superstitious. So I had to be alone sailing at Jaws with those big waves and even though it was not a very big day for Jaws, for me it was pretty hardcore. I am very respectful of waves, and it is scary being alone in a new spot; you never really know where the wave will break. The waves were so fast that I realised that a small mistake could mean I’d lose my life… I was really scared! I got so sick on the back of the ski on the way to Jaws, that I wanted to vomit really bad. I was pretty much breathless by the beginning of the session but when I started riding I felt better. It was so much fun, I took the two biggest waves of my life, and I came out alive, I just had one small wipe-out on an inside wave and was fine!’
